Laughingly Bad!

Sam Newfield gives Ed Wood a run for his Worst Director Ever title. This movie is so bad I don't know where to begin. I agree with the previous reviewer on the $17.95 budget but I hope they didn't pay the organist for that 'god awful' music score. That eerie electric organ music is more irritating than a dentist's drill. The acting is pretty bad all around with Sid Melton, embarrassingly unfunny as the comedy element, as the worst of the bunch. Sheila Ryan as the wrongly accused's fiancée, shows virtually no emotion in his situation. Richard Emory comes off best as her fiancée, probably because he has very few scenes. The story wasn't that bad and a better director could have made this a hit. I got this in a set titled Forgotten (Film) Noir and now I know why it was forgotten. If it wasn't for that terrible organ music I'd recommend it for laughs!

Ingrid Bergman at one of her bests

Ingrid Bergman highlights in this compelling melodrama about a burgeois mother who becomes aware of the unfortunate social classes after the loss of a son. The film goes a step further and can also be read as the social portrait of the European status quo after the Great War. Some dialogs may appear evident and simplistic as far as ideology is concerned, but the impressive conclusion and the characteristic Rossellini's style makes it one of the most interesting films of his director and a valuable document about psychological war consequences which hasn't loose relevance.

Decent adaptation of a literary masterpiece

I don't know why the rating for this movie is so low.Why did you,other 4 people, rated this so low? I think it does a good work adapting Dosteievsky's best known book (and one of my favorite novels) .You may think the movie simplifies the book, but in spite of that I think it's true to the novel's main theme.I think they made a good effort in recreating the atmospheres the Russian master describes. I really liked the way the movie ends, with Ramón, the Mexican Raskolnikov, simply saying "I killed" as he enters the police station.Finally, if it's true that this film is far from movie masterpieces from that era like "Los olvidados"; I believe it's still outstanding into it's Mexican golden age of movies context.

Review :

Castles in the air

This might be the least known of Clement's films.It has an intriguing beginning and an unexpected end;in between ,it's sometimes dull.

The film begins with a strange monologue by Michèle Morgan :sometimes we feel she is out of her mind.Then she and Jean Marais (what a beautiful pairing:) go to a ball : a mystery atmosphere almost predating that of "Last Year in Marienbad" .

The cinematography is dazzling and really flatters the stars.But the story itself is never really exciting,cause we've been through this should-I-leave-my-husband/Heartbreaker -finding- true-love run-of-the-mill too many times.

The ending may have disconcerted the audience of 1950 that were not used to that kind of unexpected thing.There's something of "twelve monkeys" here;actually the movie will end in the future tense.

Cheaper to Elope

As I write this review my brother is currently contemplating the cost of a big wedding for his oldest daughter and is thinking that it would be nice if she went and did like her younger sister did, go off and elope. After the surprise of Elopement there's a lot to be said for that option.

Elopement finds Clifton Webb and Margalo Gilmore in a huge tizzy over the fact that their newly graduated daughter Anne Francis is eloping with none other than her philosophy professor William Lundigan. They get a hold of his parents Charles Bickford and Evelyn Varden and find similar concern about suddenly getting a new daughter-in-law. As Lundigan and Francis travel to Deerfield, New Jersey to get married, the in-laws to be are also racing against time to get the young ones to reconsider. In tow is Francis's godfather Reginald Gardiner and Lundigan's little brother Tommy Rettig.

Although he tries hard William Lundigan is way too old for the part. It's even indicated that he had war service in World War II. And if young Rettig is his brother all I can say is that Varden must have been fertile for much longer than the natural span of things for women. Someone closer to Francis's age should have been cast.

Webb and Gardiner work well together having the same urbane and occasionally acerbic style. Too bad they didn't do more films together.

Elopement is definitely minor league Clifton Webb although his fans will like it.

A Simple Jerk of Fate

After a tonsillectomy, hyper-maniac Huntz Hall (as Horace DeBussy "Sach" Jones) begins crooning like Bing Crosby (a fine dubbing imitation, by John Lorenz). Enterprising Leo Gorcey (as "Slip" Mahoney) turns the ageing youngsters' "Sweet Shop" hang-out into "Bowery Palace" with help from piano playing pal Gabriel Dell (as Gabe Moreno) and "Bowery Boys" William "Billy" Benedict (as Whitey), Buddy Gorman (as Butch), and David Gorcey (as Chuck); there, Mr. Hall becomes singing sensation "The Bowery Thrush". Formulaic to a fault, with highlights being sweet 'n' sexy guest stars, like Phyllis Coates (as Sally Dolan) and Adele Jergens (as Lola Stanton). Note, "Blues Busters" features the last appearance of Mr. Dell, an original "Dead End" kid, in the Bowery series.

Noir gets a Sense of Humour

An American Cinematheque presentation at The Egyptian.

B-movie, second-feature that plays as a cross between classic noir and serial melodrama. As such, it's easy to see how it's often credited with being a predecessor of the police procedural.

Stevens and O'Brian play two likable LAPD patrol cops. Gale Storm the wholesome new dispatch girl who keeps their attention at night. Most of the movie deals with the growing and affectionately written romance between Stevens and Storm, making the whole thing seem at times like a vintage episode of 'Payton Place'. But make no mistake, we're in noir territory, and it's only a matter of time before we're dealing with gangsters, their molls, heartbreaking tragedy and small children being held from eighth floor windows.

The leads are so charismatic, and the writing so sharp, that it's almost impossible not to like this film. Another little post-war gem of a movie.

Powerful Kirk Douglas Performance in NYC Precinct Drama

Adapted from a stage play by Sidney Kingsley, "Detective Story" depicts a day at a New York police precinct in the early 1950's. The film resembles a feature-length episode of "Barney Miller" without the jokes as the detectives bring various shoplifters, petty thieves, and embezzlers into the station for booking. However, the film does not lack humor as a broad hammy performance by Joseph Wiseman and an only slightly subtler take on a Brooklynese shoplifter by Lee Grant lighten up the often heavily dramatic proceedings.

The central character, Detective Jim McLeod, is an unforgiving, by-the-book veteran, who sees the world in black and white, good versus evil, with no shades of gray in between. Kirk Douglas brings McLeod to life in one of his finest, most powerful performances. Douglas's Oscar-caliber work is matched by a fragile, deeply felt performance by Eleanor Parker as McLeod's wife, who harbors a secret from her past that, unknown to either McLeod or his wife, connects back to an on-going police case. The scenes between Douglas and Parker are among the best in the film.

Veteran director William Wyler retains most of the play's action in the central precinct room and only occasionally breaks from the claustrophobic set for a breather. Lee Garmes photographed "Detective Story" in crisp black and white, and some of the shots of New York City could be framed and hung on a wall. With a cast of top character players that includes Gladys George, William Bendix, Frank Faylen, and George Macready, the multi-character, multi-plotted "Detective Story" is a powerful, well-acted film that somehow is less often seen than its quality warrants.

Massey is good, and an interestingly odd script.

"Barricade" is most noteworthy for the villainous performance of Raymond Massey, who clearly relishes his role as a vile manipulator of men with no moral compass at all. Mr. Massey's "Boss Kruger" lures wanted men (that is, wanted by the law) into his private hell-hole in the middle of the desert, with promises of good wages to do some mining work, and keeps them there as virtual slaves and prisoners.

Though a true B- western, this film features a script that is fast-moving, and not completely predictable. There is a brief Shakespeare-quoting duel, for example. And, rather unusually, Massey keeps a painting of England's King Richard III, who he idolizes, in his office.

A couple of other noteworthy oddities: In hindsight, there is not single character in this film who we can truly sympathize with, not a hero of any kind. Even Dane Clark, as the nominal protagonist, though likable, is not a text-book Western hero. Weirder still is that the cast features, not 1, but 2 jockey-sized actors (that is to say, slightly freakishly undersized), as members of Massey's dysfunctional workforce. One plays the drunken pastor cum judge, and the other a sleazy turncoat with a slightly theatrical manner.

Ruth Roman is achingly gorgeous throughout; yet, in another oddity, the director and producer clearly made a decision to have not one bit of sexual suggestion in the movie. Though she is the only female in an isolated nest of male vipers, not one makes a lavicious play for her. Very interesting, very different.

If you like Westerns, then you can do worse than this. Keep your eyes on Massey and Roman, and you will be reasonably entertained for the little more than an hour it takes to watch this one.
