Grand retelling of wonderful story, Flynn still shines

This is a grand retelling of a wonderful story, with Flynn still shining through, though he is not in fact the main character in the tale. Young Dean Stockwell is the person who is on camera on almost every scene and he shows swagger and plumb that indicates a real talent and understanding of his part. While Flynn was certainly nearing the end of his career, he still showed he still possessed his outstanding ability to play parts such as his "horse trader" in this costumer, which no actors alive today, save Peter O'Toole or Sean Connery - who not surprisingly made another outstanding Kipling piece into the movie - "The Man Who Would Be King", are able to match. The movie is highly entertaining and the supporting players are veterans all and play their parts very well.

Brisk Fun

Holt and co come to the aid of a pal when two nasties try to nab his goldmine by nabbing his girl. One of these is a spunky gal monikered 'gypsy', played by Veda Ann Borg; another in the endless succession of 20s and 30s-drafted 'starlets' who never made it past the starting blocks. She did though take a few notable roles, including 'Mildred Pierce'; Shirley Temple's 'adult' intended career-rejuvinator Bachelor Knight; and nostalgic Betty Grable vehicle Mother Wore Tights.

Of course this is nothing new, but it seems much brisker than usual, and if it doesn't exactly cut it in the 'artistic' departments it is simply an hour's fun entertainment. Sometimes that's all you want out of Western cinema!

Commies!

The actual story of this as it develops is so ordinary that it is a waste of time: one fist fight after another. The situations are indefensibly unimaginative.

Its the premise of the thing that's interesting. I'll give it to you here so you don't have to watch this.

There's a master criminal bent on taking over the country. He has a "chemical" from some unknown foreign country. Anything coated with this is invisible when illuminated with a certain lamp. This two part system leads to the amazing improbably: the bad guy can skulk about unseen if his accomplice keeps a light shown on him from a truck. But the beam is narrow, so the accomplice has to move it to barely cover the skulker. So how does he know where to point the beam?

The commie metaphor is extended. The bad guy has a group of helpers that are illegally smuggled into this country. They are clearly European. He places them in positions where they can spy and steal unknown to their blind employers. Though they aren't literally invisible as the boss would make them eventually (if he could only get enough of that chemical!) they are virtually so. No employer suspects until it is too late.

This is much like "Federal Agents vs. the Underworld" (which preceded it) in most respects.

Effective propaganda but the source of the film makes me wonder how accurate this all is.

"Der Rat der Götter" ("Council of the Gods") is based, at least in part, on the book "I.G. Farben" by American author, Richard Sasuly--who based it on testimony during the Nuremberg trials. However, considering that the film was a joint Soviet and East German effort, I wonder how closely the film sticks to the facts--especially since the focus of the film is often on the evils of corporations and the goodness of labor unions and the communist party in Germany. Obviously the West Germans and Americans weren't interested in making such a film, as the Cold War was in full swing. And, obviously the Soviets and East Germans wanted to make the capitalist systems look bad. So what is the real truth here? I have no idea--but it does make for a compelling film--whether or not it's accurate or if the facts have been twisted to make the anti-capitalist point. One example of such manipulation was as showing actual footage of a chance explosion at the BASF plant and saying it was of the Farben plant--which did not explode. The next ten minutes was a diatribe against capitalism--and a relatively shallow one at that. Also, the film saying the company in question was pro-Hitler was unfair because they actually contributed to MANY political groups--not just the Nazis. Still, considering the East Germans based this on finding of American investigators makes me think the basic plot is accurate.

I noticed that one reviewer felt the film was dull. I didn't find it that dull but could understand their sentiments. It's a film that is rather talky much of the time and most of the action consists of just a few pieces of stock footage from WWII scattered here and there. However, I found the movie fascinating because anti-Western propaganda films are rarely seen in the US and it was a rare glimpse into the Soviet Bloc world. Plus, the film did have a compelling message about internationalists and corporations profiting from and loving war. Sure, it twisted a few facts here and there--but it did heighten the suspense and added to the impact. And it did get its message across well.

By the way, there is a short documentary in which the film maker talks about the film. He stands by the accuracy of the film overall but admits some 'artistic license' was used as well.

"I Need To Stay Free To Clear Myself"

Jim Davis later patriarch of the Ewing family of Dallas stars as a paroled ex-convict who is working as a truck driver. He gets himself hi-jacked a couple of times and his job and the authorities start suspecting him of being an inside man. The guy who's really doing the tipping decides with the fence for the stolen merchandise to sweeten the suspicious pot by planting evidence to incriminate him. Though carrying a weapon is an automatic trip back to the joint, as Davis points out, he has to stay free to clear himself. Especially after the evidence implicates his completely innocent wife Marcia Mae Jones and she's arrested when the police miss him.

The film reminds of a much superior noir classic Kansas City Confidential where John Payne finds himself in a similar jackpot. Not that this is a bad film, but its from the poverty row Lippert Pictures studio and has the shallow production values of its origins.

Davis does well as a guy looking to take care of business and the crooks who have done him wrong. The gang is headed by fence Paul Cavanaugh who advises and doesn't control. The muscle is done by David Bruce and he has a rough bunch with him including a wannabe in Sid Melton. Melton was in a whole lot of Lippert productions providing much needed comedy relief. And Iris Adrian as a wisecracking waitress is also in the cast and every film that she graces is that much better for her presence.

Hi-Jacked is a good product, very good considering the cheapness of its origins.

Love, Greed and Revenge under the olive trees

"Non c'é pace tra gli ulivi" (No peace under the olive tree) is a powerful neorealist film. It was filmed in natural locations in the mountains of Ciociaria (the homeland of Giuseppe De Santis).. The landscape and people mix harmoniously together in this film that tells a story as old as humanity itself. The rocky mountainous landscape adds an epic scope and an exquisite beauty to the film.

"Non c'è pace tra gli ulivi" tells a story of revenge and solidarity – A shepherd, Francesco (Ralf Vallone) after spending three years in the war (World War 2) and still more three years in jail, returns home. His old parents and sister had been left by themselves. A unscrupulous shepherd, Bonfiglio (Folco Lulli) had taken advantage of the state of chaos generated by the war to steal the flock of sheep that belonged to Francesco's family, leaving them destitute. And Bonfiglio doesn't stop at that – by way of threats and cajolery he forces Lucia, Francesco's fiancée, (Lucia Bosè) to marry him. Bonfiglio is a man on the rise, slowly imposing his will on the other shepherds – stealing, threatening and using force when necessary.

Francesco on his return finds his family completely impoverished, barely having enough to eat and his fiancée taken away by Bonfiglio (the same man that had stolen his family's flock of sheep!). But Francesco is not one of those men who put up with trouble without taking action. What will he do?

As you can see by my introduction, the story of the film is highly melodramatic, and the acting is also a bit exaggerated, but strangely enough this doesn't spoil the film, it rather stresses the strength of the story. The actors, the landscape and a story that seems to be taken from a Greek tragedy lend this film something almost cosmic and also very humanistic. Giuseppe De Santis's passion for his homeland and its people are shown in full force in "Non c'è pace tra gli ulivi".

Certainly "Non c'è pace tra gli ulivi" may not be not as truthful to reality as other neorealist films. Professional actors star in the main roles. Raf Vallone as Francesco and Lucia Bose (that two years earlier had been elected Miss Italy) could stand up as models for Latin beauty. And even Folco Lulli as the villain doesn't lose his humanity. In fact, one could say that "Non c'è pace tra gli ulivi " stems from the same sources that gave us Homer and Virgil. Following the classic patterns of the old masters, an old story of passion, greed and revenge is told.

The landscape, the dances of the shepherds, the songs, Lucia Bosè's beauty against the backdrop of the steep and rocky mountains of Ciociaria... enough said! "Non c'è pace tra gli ulivi" as well as other neorealist films of the time (for example, the classic "Riso Amaro" also directed by De Santis) caused a deep impression all around the world. Lima Barreto, a great Brazilian filmmaker, showed in "O Cangaceiro", filmed in 1953, that he had learned a thing or two with the Italian neorealist films.

When I first saw this movie I didn't think I would like it. I didn't think it was my "type" of movie. I was wrong. HARVEY will make you laugh and at the same time show you the power of kindness. JAMES STEWART makes you believe someone is there even know his friend is an invisible 6-foot tall rabbit. It is easily one of the best movies ever made! If you don't know what this movie is or haven't seen it for any reason all I have to say is "GO SEE IT!" Even if you don't like black and white movies, there is something in this movie for everyone. If you like drama, comedy, or just films that make you feel good inside this movie is for you.

Affectionate, sentimental, humorous

This is a gentle, affectionate take on a middle aged bar hostess, struggling to bring up a child alone and facing financial, sexual and end of career issues, as well as the implied disapproval of society. There is plenty of humour, though, and acute observation of people and relationships in their everyday lives.

Apparently slow initially, one gets gradually drawn in to care for these essentially good characters, even the weak and slightly unreliable ones (generally men).

The set pieces of bar life are particularly well observed. And the mutual respect and simple good manners of Japanese society as depicted is always fascinating to Western eyes.

As ever with Naruse, the camera-work is so effective one is hardly conscious of it as one engages with this picture of a determined but dignified struggle by a virtuous woman.

STIFF ADAPTATION

In December 1950 Curt Goetz and Valerie von Mertens were for the first time after their exile back on the German stages. Their first and immediate success was the play Das Haus in Montevideo. Obviously prompted by this, Curt Goetz adapted the play for film and took the direction in his own hands.

Went it all quickly, maybe? The adaptation went no further than adding a few scenes to give the impression that the play was now a film script. Goetz's direction is aimed at the play and the cast, not aimed at film direction. The result is that it is nothing more than a registration of the play, in which the humour and wit never gets the chance to rise to the surface. Now it is only important as documentation of Curt Goetz/Valerie von Merten's life and work.. Plain, sometimes less than that, cinematography add to the tedium.

An also not completely successful but far better adaptation was made by Helmut Käutner in 1963.

They go to New Rochelle where he is wounded attempting another robbery. Martha performs the necessary surgery, believing that he will give up his life of crime. When she finds him in New York with another girl, Martha gives the police his picture and hideout location, but he escapes the police trap. He flees to Los Angeles where he meets wealthy divorcee Mrs. Arthur Vinson (Jacqueline De Wit), whose confidence he wins in order to systematically rob her society friends' jewels.

Pretty Good Programmer

Pretty good thick-ear, based on the true life exploits of master jewel thief Gerard Dennis. Seems Dennis has an eye for beautiful things, both women and big-time gemstones, and doesn't much care how he goes about getting them. Actor Brian looks the womanizing part with enough smiling charm to access society's higher reaches where fancy baubles suddenly disappear, while he just keeps smiling. And why not, since some of Hollywood's classiest looking dames—deWit, Talton, Chandler—fall for him in short order. But, as we were all taught by old movies like this one, crime doesn't pay, at least for some people.

I like the way director Godfrey keeps things moving, especially that nail-biting 'human fly' sequence. Also, the screenplay manages a few minor surprises, thanks to ace scripter Borden Chase, whose real life exploits give him inside exposure to crime and criminals (check out his rather surprising bio). Heck, the script even has Dennis trying to pick up cheap blonde Cleo Moore while his wife looks on, in a nifty little sequence. However, I think the material would have worked better as noir instead of less expressive docu-drama. In fact, the film has an overall drab look, unbefitting the sometimes sumptuous surroundings and the strong narrative drama.

Nonetheless, for an obscure programmer, the movie is fast moving and better than average.
