Review :

OK Republic blackmail-murder mystery, with stunning Raymond Burr performance

I must concur with the other review of this Republic crime programmer. It's an above average b-crime film with an interesting blackmail/murder plot, but what makes it a classic is the stunning performance by Raymond Burr as the blackmailing, murdering, malicious, sleazy scandal-sheet publisher/editor. Burr had a long string of fine performances as villains in his pre-Perry Mason days, but this is one of the three or four best, perhaps because in standard Republic fashion the leads are quite bland. Paul Harvey is superb as the weak-willed theatrical producer whose wife is killed; Hillary Brooke isn't in the film that much, but she's quite memorable as the unpleasant Doris King; and Norman Budd is charming as the comedic, bungling, cigar-stealing criminal underling. The two leads, Robert Rockwell as the police detective and Barbara Fuller as Harvey's daughter, are somewhat bland, although it's hard to tell if the script or the performers were to blame. This was not uncommon at Republic, where the stuntmen and the supporting players are often more interesting than the no-name leads. Still, Republic b-programmers are always slickly put together and fast moving, and this one is no exception. Those who love Raymond Burr's early supporting work MUST see this film. Those who like Burr but are not too familiar with his pre-Perry Mason work must also see it--your respect for Burr, which may already be high, will grow much deeper. He was an amazing talent who is sorely missed. There were no small roles for him--if it was a bottom-of-the-bill b-movie that few if any critics would see, Burr still gave the film his full talents. In this film, Raymond Burr passes the ultimate test for a movie villain: you almost cheer him along, wanting to see how much evil he can get away with! Bravo, Mr. Burr!!!

Denise Darcel Steals Every Scene!

Out of all the Lex Barker Tarzan movies, I love this one the best because of Denise Darcel. She plays Lola, a feisty, buxom beauty who steals every scene she's in! Her sassy ways and sharp tongue gets her in a lot of trouble, but she doesn't care. She sets her sights on any handsome man she sees and isn't reluctant to let them know she's interested. Darcel's character is funny, too. She gets into a fight with Jane and gets tossed around the room! Too funny! It was nice to see a Jane who could handle herself, but there was no chemistry between this Jane and hunky Tarzan. The jungle trip to the secret city is also very good because it's creepy and full of suspense. In my opinion, it's one of the best!

Dagwood in Charge

BEWARE OF BLONDIE (Columbia, 1950), directed by Edward Bernds, finishes the popular sit-com film series starring its original leads of Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake as Chic Young's comic strip couple of Blondie and Dagwood Bumstead, the roles they originated in 1938. The character of Dagwood's employer, Mr. Dithers, returns, but instead of Jonathan Hale, who had played the irritable boss from 1938 to 1946, he is portrayed this time by Edward Earle, whose is seen briefly seated with focus of the back of his head.

In the 28th chapter, the story opens at the Bumstead household with the family gathered together in the living room with children Alexander (Larry Simms) doing his homework and Cookie (Marjorie Kent) playing the piano, before heading for bed. Dagwood (Arthur Lake) suddenly remembers that he has to fill out his income tax form, and finds himself working on it all night while the family is asleep. Spouse Blondie (Penny Singleton), who has noticed that Dagwood hasn't slept in his bed all night, comes downstairs to find him asleep at his desk. She then gets him to finish his sleep in bed. Easier said than done when Dagwood finds his sleep with constant interruptions, including the sanitation men picking up the early morning trash and making noise banging the tin garbage cans. As Dagwood yells out the window for quiet, he disturbs the neighbors, Herb and Harriet Woodley (Emory Parnell and Isabel Withers). As he returns to bed his alarm clock goes off, indicating that it's time to get up and get ready for work. Dagwood arrives at the office exhausted, falling asleep in the elevator and taking numerous up and down trips before he is retrieved by employee Ollie (Jack Rice), who, along with the others in the staff, in need of the key to get into the office. Afterwards, Dagwood encounters Toby Clifton (Adele Jergens), an attractive blonde client who happens to be a swindler. In order to get the company bonds, she stages to have her husband, Adolph (Douglas Fowley) arrive at the scene in her apartment in a jealous rage and accusing Dagwood to be his wife's lover. After Dagwood does give Toby the company bonds, he learns later on that he had been swindled. Dooped again and feeling guilty, he starts having nightmares and dreams of himself being caught, put on trial, found guilty and sentenced to serve time on a chain gang. An amusing moment finds Dagwood struggling to make his escape with a giant iron ball and chain around his leg as he is pursued by a comic guard and his dog. But will Dagwood's nightmares continue? What will really happen to him when Mr. Dithers learns what Dagwood has done with the company bonds? Will Blondie be able to get him out of another mess?

For the last time in the series viewers will get a glimpse of watching the Bumstead children, Alexander, formerly "Baby Dumpling", as played by Larry Simms, now a teen-aged high schooler; Danny Mummert appearing briefly as Alexander's best friend and know-it-all, Alvin Fuddow; Daisy, the Bumstead pooch and her pups; and Marjorie Kent as the youngest member of the Bumstead clan, Cookie; all making final screen appearances after many years in their character parts. Alyn Lockwood returns once more as Mary, the switchboard girl of the Dithers Construction Company. Dick Wessel as the neighborhood postman who always becomes part of the running gag as he constantly gets knocked down by Dagwood as he races out of the house to catch his bus to work, first played by Irving Bacon and later Eddie Acuff, comes upon a great idea in this segment by delivering the mail to the Bumsteads around midnight. But even that doesn't work, for that Dagwood, realizing that he has to get his income tax mailed out before the midnight deadline, races out of the house only to run into the postman for the last time on screen. The postman, realizing that he is fighting a losing battle, runs into the night with Dagwood yelling at him to stop and take the letter back with him. While the neighbors, the Woodleys, have appeared in many of the Blondie comic strips throughout the years, this became the only time in the series in which they are mentioned and seen.

Although a weak production in which the central actors, Singleton and Lake, seem to appear bored with their roles, especially in the way they speak to one another in the early portion of the story, they do manage to rise above the predictable script and situations by producing new quota of laughs with old time worn material.

Years after the finish of the movie series, "Blondie" and the Bumsteads would return in two separate but short-lived television sit-coms: 1957 with Pamela Britton as Blondie and Arthur Lake as Dagwood; 1968 starring Patricia Harty as Blondie and Will Hutchins as Dagwood, with Jim Backus perfectly cast as Mr. J.C. Dithers. As the long running film series (1938-1950) emerged on television in the early 1970s, it reintroduced itself to its former audience as well as finding a new generation of viewers who finally get to see the syndicated comic strip characters come to life.

BEWARE OF BLONDIE is available on video cassette (with new opening and introduction with a sing-along theme song), and had enjoyed frequent revivals, many with the original opening and closing credits restored, on American Movie Classics from 1996 to 2001. (**)

Stylish film noir

"Side Street" is a stylish, if convoluted murder mystery about a failed small-time business man (Joe Norson) who is tempted into committing a robbery. Unfortunately the money he takes belongs to a couple of ruthless blackmailers, who aren't impressed when Joe offers to return it - mainly because the "friend" he left it with for safe-keeping helped himself to it. From then on, everything Joe tries gets him deeper into trouble.

Over-long and over-complicated, but competently made and in best film noir style makes good use of light and shade. Conveys well the general seediness and desperation of small-timers trying to make the big time in New York.

Very watchable, not least for Jean Hagen as the vamp who sets the guys up.

Simply the Perfect Film

All About Eve is simply the perfect film. Fact follows fiction in the casting of Bette Davis, a star who was an incredible actress but fighting the inevitable - the passage of time. First off, Better Davis was always an incredible actress, no matter what part she took and this was the perfect part for her. Anne Baxter is tremendous in the part of Eve - she plays the part well. It's multi-faceted and challenging and she definitely rose to the challenge. Celeste Holm is great, too. She's got a smaller part but does a great job with it. Celeste Holm is an actress who has incredible stature, even in the later years of her career, like when she was in that television show "Promised Land." But Addison DeWitt - takes the cake. I can see why he won the Oscar. I don't want to say much about the story. The film is one that has to be taken in as a whole to be truly appreciated. Enjoy it - it's as tasty as honey! One thing - please never let them make a re-make of this film

Gritty Little Outdoor Drama

Pete (Graves) returns to small mountain town to reacquaint with adopted brother Ownie (Calhoun) and police chief father (Fenton). While there, the bank is robbed under puzzling circumstances.

Reviewer hschmoo is right—this is a solid outdoor film, with scenic river locations, an unpredictable narrative, and some effective characterizations. The rapport between the brothers (Calhoun & Graves) appears genuine; at the same time, Fenton is excellent as the hardened cop father. The shifting dynamic between the three makes up the story's crux. We also get a flavor of a small town as the townspeople are drawn into the local bank robbery. Frankly, I had some trouble following who was in on what and why, but maybe I'm just slow. Much of the story is told in flashback while Graves hurtles down the roaring river and we wonder why he's chasing after his cop dad.

Director Rawlins and Ventura Productions were responsible the following year for an excellent little Western, Fort Defiance (1951), also with Peter Graves. Apparently, River was Graves' first movie, but you'd never guess it. It also looks like he did his own boating down the rapids, nor, for that matter, could I spot any of the usual Hollywood process shots. I suspect the unusually despairing final scene was due to this being an independent production made a long way from Hollywood and it's conventional endings. The narrative is definitely not a series of studio clichés, which makes this gritty little oddity doubly worth watching.

The Mambo King Acts

«Al son del mambo» is not a very good musical comedy. It script is too sketchy and the action is often slowed down every time Resortes, Borolas and Harapos have to perform their comic routines. The action supposedly takes place in Cuba, but it was almost entirely shot in Mexican sound stages. Don Chonito Godínez (Resortes), the rich owner of an enchilada business, runs away from Mexico, to escape from fast modern life, and tries to find solace (of all places!) in La Habana. After a long and not-too-funny flashback of a routine with Nacho Contla (as Chonito's father), added to explain his present state of mind, Don Chonito is led by a restaurateur called Maria La O (Amparo Arozamena), to a resort in the countryside, along with his pretty sister (Esther Luquín), a depressed American woman (Joan Page), a handsome composer (Roberto Romaña) and two detectives (Borolas, Harapos) who must give him very important information. Under the administration of Cuban singer Rita Montaner and with singing and dancing provided by her daughter Reyna (Cuban vedette Amalia Aguilar), the hacienda that houses the resort is something of a cabaret all day long. So with the owners and all their friends (including "Mambo King", Pérez Prado with his complete orchestra), Don Chonito decides to enjoy himself, doing nothing but dancing mambo. The real assets of this rather long comedy are the musical number performed along the action, and in the final 30 minutes as a review: it is a highly valuable document of the rhythms of those days, featuring numbers by great artists as Montaner and Pérez Prado, as well as singer Pedro Galindo with mariachis, pianist Juan Bruno Tarraza and many others. Besides Pérez Prado's music, one also has the chance to see him as an actor; and see Resortes, Aguilar, Page, the voluptuous Dolly Sisters, and young rising star Anabelle Gutiérrez, enjoy their mambo dancing to a hilt.

The King of the Cowboys in color with Dale Evans and a mountain lion

Though the story isn't much,about a reformed outlaw who is kidnapped along with his sister from Cuba by a gang of counterfeiters of gold certificates no good in the United States but worth face value in Europe, this Roy Rogers outing has all the ingredients his fans loved. The King's Queen Dale Evans puts on a good show as the daughter of the local lawman. There's Pat Brady of the Sons of the Pioneers for comedy, though his jeep Nellie Belle that made his act so funny on early television is not there to add to the laughs. Many times that piece of machinery actually upstaged Pat which tells you something of his brand of humor. Trigger is featured in an escapade with a mountain lion and with the outlaws. At one point Trigger is wounded and has to be nursed back to health by Pat, who is somewhat of a doctor for both animals and humans. The Sons of the Pioneers are not around but a similar group called the Riders of the Purple Sage do a fair job filling in for them. And Roy gets to sing a song or two. So "Twilight in the Sierras" should delight Roy and Dale's many fans.

This film was released toward the end of Roy and Dale's long trail on the big screen. They went over to the new medium of television with a popular show and continued to perform off and on the rest of their lives. Toward the end, Dale with Roy's assistance devoted much time and energy to religious causes, appearing often on evangelical television shows. Roy and Dale also did an excellent show on The Nashville Network (TNN) where they would sit together and discuss their movie career sometimes with special guests. With the discussions many of their old films were shown, some for the first time on television.

Dale was a noted songwriter--actually better than Roy at writing and as good as Roy when it came to singing. Dale began her career as a singer of jazz and pop before she met Roy. Dale even wrote their television theme "Happy Trails." Unfortunately in "Twilight in the Sierras" as in the other westerns she made with Roy she serves as a mere appendage to him. The producers never really let her strut her stuff. There were other cowgirls around at the time such as television's Annie Oakley (Gail Davis) and Jennifer Holt (Tim Holt's sister) who took the lead and were as tough and ornery as their male counterparts. Not so Dale. At times she so bungled the situation that instead of hitting the bad guy she would accidentally hit Roy and knock him out. I remember hearing comments from other kids in the theater when I was about ten years old watching Roy and Dale, "Ain't that just like a woman. Always getting in the way." Unintentionally Dale did a lot to promote the sexism that existed in Hollywood during Roy's heyday, which is sad since she was such a talented and gifted woman and didn't have to be in Roy's shadow, but that's the way she wanted it as a devoted wife and mother.

Kindhearted but dated

Just another TCM time-passer. June Allyson brings her usual earnest charm to a movie that just didn't have much to it. The essential weakness is that the screenplay cannot make up its mind whether it wants to be a "look at all those crazy animals" comedy or a political "the honest man will win" film. When the movie finally makes its decision at the end, it just made me wonder why it spent all that time on the other thread. I've also been fairly suspicious of movies that have more than one credited director. Maybe that played a role here too.

The high point for me was the performance of Cecil Kellaway as the father. TCM and IMDb make a great combination for learning about the wonderful character actors of Hollywood history.

Mock Toto

Although it was released in 1949,it was the eighties before this spoof on one of the most famous French movies of all time was shown in Julien Duvivier's country."Pepe Le Moko" was remade twice in the U.S...and once in Italy .I guess some of the jokes concerning the political situation of Italy at the time are lost on the FRench audience.My favorite part is the first when Toto does not know,has not got an idea of what his pals are expecting from him.It's less successful when he becomes a "true" gangster .The parody is sometimes marvelously precise,mainly in the first half ,and Gianna Maria Canale is ideally cast as the Femme Fatale.
