Review :

Low-budget prison drama that wears its heart on its (striped) sleeve

Leading man Douglas Kennedy's uncanny resemblance to tough guy Robert Ryan almost makes up for the lack of star names in this watchable B-movie. Kennedy is convincing as a crusading reporter who goes under cover as a chain-gang guard to expose the brutality of the penal system. Brandishing his high-tech (for the time) camera disguised as a cigarette lighter, he tries to conceal his bleeding heart liberal credentials secret from his oafish colleagues as he posts a series of shocking exposes.

The film's brief running time doesn't give director Lew Landers much of a chance to explore nuances of character or theme. But it's not giving anything away to say that the real villains here aren't the guys in the striped suits.

If you're a fan of this particular sub-genre of prison movies, you'll want to check out the infinitely superior Paul Muni vehicle, I Am a Fugitive From A Chain Gang.

ealings Australian western

Ealing Studios had a flirtation with Australia just after the war.This clearly was their attempt to do a western.The sheep drive with hostile aborigines is virtually identical to many cattle drives with warring Apaches.As usual there are the usual disparate characters.The old reliable Chips Rafferty and the soon to be Doctor in EW10,Charles Tingwall.However when it comes to Tommy Trinder one starts to scratch ones head.One can only assume that Ealing tried to build him in to their substitute for George Formby.The one consistent note of all his Ealing performances is that he was no actor.The outback is well photographed and the scenes with the aborigines are quite interesting as we do learn a little about their culture.

One of his best

I think that so many people only think of Red Skelton from TV and I think they forget that he did movies and in fact very funny movies. I scrounged around until I could find most of them on VHS but now I long for a good DVD set. The Yellow Cab Man has got to be my favorite, I laugh so hard at parts of it that I have to actually pause the film so that I can catch my breath. I usually don't care that much for physical comedy but he and Danny Kaye seem to be the masters of the art and their movies have me rolling on the floor every time. The plot in here is really not that great but it is just what is done with a simple idea -A nice guy that is totally accident prone trying to be a cab driver and show his new invention. Just wind Red up and let him loose.

Roy Undercover

The Cold War and the quest for uranium ore comes into the plot of this Roy Rogers western, The Bells Of Coronado. Roy plays an insurance investigator who is assigned by John Hamilton to investigate the theft of unrefined uranium ore and incidentally the death of the owner of a mine from where it was stolen.

Dale Evans co-stars and it would surprise many to learn that Dale was only the leading lady in about a quarter of Roy's films. The films that she did co-star with Roy are elevated an extra notch because of the obvious chemistry between the two.

Roy is undercover in this one working at the power company that operates nearby the uranium mine. The mine is owned by Grant Withers who is also Dale's uncle in this film. The usual kittenish banter between Roy and Dale is present which always makes their films interesting.

Clifton Young who died much too young plays his usual murderous villain. Film fans will remember him best from the Humphrey Bogart - Lauren Bacall feature Dark Passage. Young is always good in any film he does.

Why Republic was so shy in not coming out and mentioning the Russians is beyond me. They are referred to only as 'the other side'. And the chief villain is not one you would suspect, especially coming from a B western.

The Bells Of Coronado will have enough singing, riding, and gunplay to satisfy any aged front row kid from the time this was in theaters and younger fans as well.

In a POW camp, the Nazis have placed the huts far from the boundary so that any escape tunnel would have to be a long one. One British officer has the idea of starting a daily gynmastics routine using a vaulting horse: they can place it near the boundary and start a tunnel from under it. He and two others do escape the camp by this means and plan to make for neutral Sweden. To do that, they'll not only have to move around without arousing any suspicions, but also find a stranger from a neutral or occupied country who'll be willing and able to help them.

One of my all-time favorites

While thinking of "The Great Escape" I allowed my mind to wander back to this little gem of a movie from my childhood. I had read and re-read the autobiographical novel from 1949 which inspired it, and when it came to the only cinema (we never used that word then , actually) in town that showed "foreign" films, I was first in line to buy my ticket.

As someone brought up on wartime newsreels and propaganda films during WWII, I had an avid interest in exploring the realities of that conflict as reflected in the memoirs and stories of men who were there in person. That extended later to a keen willingness over the years to buy any book on the subject, and eventually to read the equally compelling novels of Hans Helmut Kirst and Erich Maria Remarque, which provided an even deeper sensibility. The movie versions, however, were unlike this one in that they rarely delivered the goods.

The medium of black-and-white film has never been served so well as it was in those years. I have never seen any technicolor version of war that seems as authentic as do the deep chiaroscuros of films like "The Wooden Horse." If it is true that we are destined always to be captive to the images of our childhood, then I confess it freely.

And there will never be another the likes of Leo Genn as the emblematic British war hero on film. Not even Sir Alec.

Male Bonding, Film Noir Style

A common cultural theme providing subtext for many a film noir was the alienation felt by servicemen returning from WWII to a world that had adapted itself to their absence. But that theme usually remained just that -- subtext. Rarely was it dealt with as overtly as in "Backfire," a modest entry in the genre from 1950, and this fact alone makes this otherwise forgettable film notable.

Bob Corey (Gordon MacRae) and Steve Connolly (Edmond O'Brien) are war buddies, Corey layed up in a veterans' hospital recovering from a spinal injury, Connolly sticking close and providing him moral support. The night before Corey's release, while in a drugged haze, Corey receives a visit from a strange, exotic woman (Viveca Lindfors), telling him that Connolly has been injured himself and is asking for Corey. The next day, as he leaves the hospital, Corey is pulled into the police station, where the head of the homicide bureau (Ed Begley) tells him of the murder of crime boss Solly Blayne and evidence incriminating Connolly as the chief suspect. Corey sets out to find his friend in an attempt to clear his name, aided by his girl Friday, nurse Julie from the veterans' hospital, played fetchingly by Virginia Mayo.

What's most interesting about "Backfire" is that though the film gives both men nominal love interests, they're much more interested in each other than either is about anyone else. It would be easy to read homosexual subtext into this film, as it is in many films noir, but it's not really played that way in the movie. The relationship between Corey and Connolly is that of two men who have had to rely on one another in literal life-and-death situations and who now do not know how to rely on anyone else.

It was refreshing to see MacRae in a film like this -- I only really knew him from his string of 1950s musicals, and he equips himself well. O'Brien, a frequent presence in films of this sort, is right at home. And Mayo is a doll, looking for all the world like a 1940s version of Laura Linney. The climax of the film is a rote shoot-em-up, but as always with movies like "Backfire," the journey is a lot more fun than the destination.

VENDETTA (Mel Ferrer and, uncredited, Max Ophuls, Preston Sturges, Stuart Heisler, Paul Weatherwax and Howard Hughes, 1950) **1/2

Despite having been dismissed by the late eminent British film critic Leslie Halliwell as an "outmoded ethnic melodrama with nothing to recommend it", I had twice before attempted to acquire this (from a local movie-buff whose chief interest in the film was the presence of beloved Maltese character actor Joseph Calleia, here incarnating the chief villain) – however, both copies froze during the climax and would not proceed further!

A costly failure for producer Howard Hughes, this was actually shot in 1946: begun by Ophuls (in what would have been his American debut), with Sturges as writer-producer (he was contemporaneously engaged on THE SIN OF HAROLD DIDDLEBOCK 1947, another troubled Hughes production); as it happened, the former was fired by Hughes after just one week (claiming his shooting pace was too slow), so Sturges was forced to take over himself. Eventually, he too was replaced – as was, for that matter, original cinematographer Franz Planer (an Ophuls regular) by Al Gilks. Hughes then appointed Heisler and, when he fell ill, editor Weatherwax was put in charge! Still unsatisfied, the producer brought in Ferrer (not yet established as an actor) ostensibly to reshoot the ending – but he was retained for much longer than was anticipated! Ultimately, while Ferrer received sole credit for the film, it is estimated that about two-thirds of the footage is actually Heisler's – whereas precious little survives of either Ophuls' or Sturges' input (even the latter's original script, which he singled out in his memoirs as his best work but also that it was "unproduced"!).

Similarly, this was originally to co-star James Mason (who eventually became good friends with Ophuls and made 2 excellent noirs with him) and Madeleine Carroll. Hughes, though, was afraid they would act his current protégée – the inexperienced Faith Domergue – off the screen and had them substituted with George Dolenz (father of Mickey from The Monkees pop group!) and Hillary Brooke (THE WOMAN IN GREEN 1945 being thus re-united with Nigel Bruce's Dr. Watson from that fine "Sherlock Holmes" adventure!). Incidentally, while proudly announcing the introduction of 3 new personalities – Domergue, Dolenz (playing siblings) and Donald Buka (as their servant-turned-bandit, forever accompanied on his exploits by future actor/director Hugo Haas) – the film's resulting lack of success stalled their star careers at the get-go!

With respect to the film itself, it comes off as an overpowering, indeed oppressively gloomy, melodrama; that said, the excessively dark and murky print I watched did it no favors at all! To my mind, the thematic intentions here were admirable – yet the background was simply too obscure (exemplified by the hilarious 'V For Vendetta' gesture!) for general audiences to particularly relate to. Still, the plot – of the new head of a Sicilian family being duty-bound to avenge the patriarch's death but, since he had been living abroad, hesitates to stand by such an archaic code – feels at once overly-familiar (interestingly, the film it most reminded me of was Luis Bunuel's underrated THE RIVER AND DEATH 1955!) and insufficiently compelling. The style, as I said earlier, is heavy-going despite undeniably atmospheric marshland scenes; another asset, then, is the effective use of Italian classical/popular music on the soundtrack.

Superb film about an unforgettable character of Spanish history .

Juan de Orduña reunited with Aurora Bautista in "Agustina De Aragón" 1950, Spanish production that recreates the siege and the battle of Zaragoza in the War of Independence of 1808 , against the French troops of Napoleon. Agustina is a woman who puts her life in service to her country and her people , and her attitude full importance in the development of the battle and subsequent events .

Agustina De Aragón was a character performed authentic document delivery of vital importance to Spain in this war . It should be noted that the film " Agustina De Aragon " was probably one of the more elaborate Spanish blockbusters of the moment. Distant technical mediocrity other Spanish films of the moment , this film presents a technical section that seems to have spared no expense : care sets (some scenes were shot in real settings even as the Cathedral of Zaragoza ) and correct special effects, costumes and photography. It's a pity the terrible sound editing , it is barely audible in scenes with music . The assembly is acceptable but not remarkable : melt greatly abused in black and medium shots , though it appears the odd close-up of the beautiful Aurora Bautista .

While the film is superb in terms of the bill technique itself is quite chaotic as the cast . Despite having fundamental names like Fernando Rey or lesser extent Aurora Bautista , the overbearing are constant but perhaps reproduce exactly what happened in 1808, as Spain was one of the few nations that strongly resisted the invasion Napoleonic . Aurora Bautista is beautiful in her character , but her performance lacks the charisma enough to be the heroine of the film.

In short, it is a very patriotic film of its time , which will please the lover of Spanish history , in particular the period of Napoleon's invasion , but from the standpoint of film can be long and repetitive. Yet it is a film must for Spanish classical theater enthusiasts .

Stop with the Shrieking already!

This film is really very good and full of suspense. A woman on a train notices strange behaviour from two men who have just boarded her train and the fact that one has a gun under his coat makes her decide to report to the train conductor. There follows a cliff-hanger of a movie involving a young, blind girl who has been kidnapped and will surely be killed by the psychotic kidnapper (Lyle Bettger) if she is not gotten to on time. There is only one jarring note - I don't think I am alone in wanting to strangle the blind girl every time she appears in the film. The director decided that she should shriek, scream and do a nails-scrapping-down-the-blackboard routine at every possible moment. This film merits more than the 7 I gave it for those who can overlook this irritating performance. Worth watching - you may want to keep the remote handy so that you can easily access the mute button.

An Interesting Group Of Deadbeats

The Admiral Was A Lady casts Wanda Hendrix as a recently discharged WAVE who by a curious chain of circumstances gets herself mixed up with four veterans all from a discharged bomber crew. If it were not for the fact that these four who are played by Edmond O'Brien, Richard Erdman, Steve Brodie, and Johnny Sands were combat veterans from the recent war, they'd be seen as deadbeats. In fact they're flirting with the status right now.

O'Brien and his pals have made a positive genius of not working and stretching their unemployment benefits to the maximum. They get caught at it, but by private detectives who are working for millionaire Rudy Vallee. Wanda's fiancé is involved with Vallee's ex-wife Hillary Brooke and Vallee wants Hillary back. Best way to do it is get Wanda and the never seen 'Henry' together.

The way Wanda talks about Henry he's quite the paragon of virtue. One thing is for sure though, he's not as much fun as the deadbeat quartet as exasperating as they can be. The only question is which one she will marry.

The title refers to the fact that the men start referring to Hendrix as 'the Admiral'. The Admiral Was A Lady is a film that deserves to be better known and might have been if it wasn't an independent released from United Artists, but came from a major studio instead.

Let's face it, this is the best version.

Sure, it had its shortcomings, and it wasn't as dark as it could have been, but this is certainly the best version of a book that has been retold time after time. As a child, this was one of my favorite books, and I always felt this was one of the best, if not the best adaptation of the book. Maybe someday someone will make a better version, but until then, my vote goes to this one.

Many Witty Moments In A Good Film.

Released the year following the very successful drama LETTER TO THREE WIVES from 20th Century Fox, this United Artists film alters its predecessor's formula by reversing the gender configuration while constructing the storyline as a comedy, producing a favourable impression upon viewers appreciative of clever plotting, witty dialogue and strong playing. It opens with a voice-over conversation between recently deceased playboy Maxwell Bard (Emlyn Williams) and a representative of Heaven deciding upon his single allotted request granted to the newly passed on - Max wishes to be permitted to view reactions over a 24 hour period of three poker playing pals when they open letters, addressed to them from him, that reveal details of ostensible dalliances that their wives enjoyed with the rakish Bard. The three husbands, performed by Shepperd Strudwick, Howard Da Silva, and Robert Karnes, display varying reactions during flashbacks revealing that, in each case, the men recall events that, in retrospect, do indeed indicate possible acts of infidelity by their wives, played respectively by Ruth Warrick, Eve Arden, and Vanessa Brown, as all the while the sardonic shade of Max hovers about the resultant comedic marital straits. Crisply paced and directed well by Irving Reis, this work is generally well played by the seven principals, although acting bays go to Louise Erickson as Matilda, or "The Menace", as she is tagged in the credits due to an adulterous liaison with one of the husbands, and there are valuable contributions from cinematographer Franz Planer and designers Rudolph Sternad and Edward Boyle.

Review :

Great humanist movie

Might be considered one of the best films of all time. This story of star-crossed adolescent lovers is well-served by the hauntingly beautiful music of Alessandro Cicognini. Vittorio De Sica is superb as the understanding teacher. Gino Leurini and beautiful Pier Angeli are respectively the Romeo and Juliet of the plot in which the intensity of the teen-agers emotions is heightened by the confining context of school life. Though little appreciated by the intelligentsia, whose taste usually leans to angst rather than tragedy - the film only got a silver ribbon - it was a huge success with the general public and deserves to be better remembered. It is a great humanist drama in the best Italian tradition.

Not A Kid In A Cowboy Suit Any More

Ambush was the second western Robert Taylor made in his career. The first was Billy the Kid eight years earlier. At the time a critic said that Robert Taylor looked like a kid in his new cowboy suit as Billy. Truth be told that was in Taylor's heartthrob days and he did look somewhat callow in the part.

No one would ever say that about Ambush. When we first meet Taylor he's with sidekick scout John McIntire with several days growth, dirty and unkempt, and on the dodge from Apaches. Of course he and McIntire escape and return to the fort they're assigned to and find a new spit and polish second in command in John Hodiak.

Even after a shave and a bath Taylor looks gritty and tough and starts to get interested in Arlene Dahl who is the daughter of a general and who's getting the army to go after her sister who's been captured by the same band of Apaches that Taylor just escaped from. Even though he knows it will cost lives Taylor scouts for the mission. He also wants to tweak Hodiak a bit who also is interested in Dahl.

There's another romantic triangle going at the post. Young lieutenant Don Taylor is interested in Jean Hagen the post laundress who's married to a wife beating enlisted man, Bruce Cowling.

This was the last film of director Sam Wood who possibly because of his right wing political views is not as well remembered today as a lot of his contemporaries. He received three nominations for Best Director for Kitty Foyle, Goodbye Mr. Chips, and King's Row. He did such other classics as Pride of the Yankees, A Day At the Races, A Night at the Opera and Our Town. That's a pretty good resume.

This maybe a cavalry picture, but it's not like one that John Ford would have directed. It's got some lean and mean characters and I don't mean just the standard villains. Ford would never have had anything as frank as out and out adultery in one of his films.

Ambush is a great western for fans of the genre and others. And after this no one was going to give Robert Taylor a review like the one he got for Billy the Kid.

Worst French movie of all time?

This one is a strong contender.It was based on a comic strip which everyone has forgotten today.I've never read it,but if it is as subtle as the film,I do not miss an awful lot.The main reason for which this flick is sought is Louis de Funes 's presence:he portrays a violin teacher with a very long beard (which predates Rabbi Jacob?).

The rest consists of grotesque gags ,lines for mentally retarded persons ,vulgar jokes .I dare you to watch this dud till the end.I called it quits halfway through.

This is the only feature film by Marcel Gibaud whose shorts,they say,are interesting.

Dreadful cheapskate movie

There is little about Killer Shark that is any way recommendable .It was made on a shoestring budget and it shows .

The theme is a variation on the classic Captains Courageous .A young College student spends the Summer working on his fathers rusting old shark fishing boat and is responsible for a serious accident which sees two men-including his father-severely injured.This places at risk his fathers ability to repay the loan on his vessel and so he resolves to put a crew together and go out in search of shark himself.Unfortunately he hooks up with a crew of robbers who plan to make away with the cargo themselves.

Poorly acted ,flat and ugly in its lighting and with a crude anti intellectual message this is a tedious experience that makes then same directors brilliant Randolph Scott Westerns from the same era all the more remarkable by contrast.

Give it a miss.
