This is one of Cagney's best films

I am not surprised to find only two previous comments about this very good film. Sadly,I have not seen it it many years, as it seems to have disappeared. My most vivid memory is about two particular scenes. The first is between Cagney and his boss (Raymond Massey). When Massey virtually orders Cagney to sober is young nephew up, Cagney replies "can't be done" . When the boss inquires why ? he is told that the drunk must first hear the sound of "angel feathers" . The feathers he relates, is the fear of death. The other scene is the one in which Cagney meets the young nephew who's name is Boyd (played by Gig Young). While completely drunk and laying down on a bed (couch ?) in Cagney's apartment, the two men engage in some banter, whereby Cagney keeps referring to his guest as Boydeee. The nephew having enough of Cagney's mispronunciation, informs him that if he calls him Boydee one more time, he will knock his block off! Cagney then informs him, that he is drunk and that he will knock nobody's block off. This last line is delivered with a smile and style that only the great Cagney was capable of. Upon hearing Cagney's reply, the nephew agrees with a smile of his own and then doses off to sleep. While watching the oncoming sleep, Cagney's expression changes from a smile to a face of concern and something else. The something else may be anger,disgust and or fear. But whatever it is, it in itself sets the tone for the rest of the film. And that look which once again, only Cagney could deliver, tells the audience that someone is in for a great deal of trouble, and part of the trouble is that Cagney doesn't know who is in for the worst of it.

The only good thing is the scenery

Bob Mitchell (Bonar Colleano) is an English man who speaks with an American accent. He's a world-traveling circus acrobat, but after falling off a chandelier in a German bar, he suffers amnesia. He is assumed to be an American. They find clues to his identities with five bank notes from five European countries, each with a different girl's name plus a picture of a baby. Lesley (Barbara Kelly) from a magazine proposes to send him to all five countries in order to find his past. The movie has five local shoots of Rome, Vienna, Berlin, Paris and London. Each one is shot with a different crew including different directors and writers.

The setup is terribly clunky and just an excuse to get Bob to 5 different cities. I do notice that the movie genre is listed as Drama, Mystery, Romance, and War. It's missing Comedy. I think they do try to make a comedy. Of course, they fail badly. Maybe that's why nobody included Comedy as the genre. Bonar Colleano is very wooden and lack the comedic skills. About the only thing that is interesting is the scenery of post War Europe.

Who believes in miracles?

The follow-up to "Manèges" ,"Les Miracles N'Ont Lieu Qu'Une Fois " depicts true love whereas the former was all cupidity,nastiness and cheat.

The screenplays bears more than a distant resemblance to "Paradis Perdu" (1939) by Abel Gance ,at least in its first third.Alida Valli and Jean Marais,both very good-looking ,portray two students who want to become surgeons;they fall in love and spend some time in paradise in Italy.Alas,WW2 breaks out.When the soldier comes home,will he meet his love again?And will their love survive eleven long years (and however WW2 ended in 1945;as the hero's marriage was short-lived ,it's strange he waits so much time to search his lost love)? Neither Allégret's directing nor Sigurd's screenplay are particularly memorable;compared to "Manèges" and its story told from two different point of views ,"Miracles" uses a monotonous voice over (Jean Marais,not at his best)till you are fed up with it.

Worth a look for the two marvelous actors,but that's it.

Allégret's and Marais's collaboration would continue in the follow-up "Nez-de -Cuir" which was more satisfying but it was 1953( "les Orgueilleux") before Allégret gave a major work again (it was his last important movie ).

DOUBLE CROSSBONES (Charles T. Barton, 1951) **

Swashbuckling comedy, not as bad as I had anticipated but clearly no more than a footnote within the annals of this colorful action genre (here in its heyday). Donald O'Connor is an amiable and undeniably energetic lead (obviously, he gets to sing and dance too) – playing a shop-keeper's assistant who wants to make good for love of heroine Helena Carter. She, however, is coveted by her much older guardian…who also happens to be the (actually treacherous) Governor of the colony in which events are set.

Immediately falling foul of pirate Charles McGraw, O'Connor eventually finds himself serving under him – after he, his pal and their employer are accused (by none other than the Governor himself) of accepting and selling stolen goods. The villain, in fact, is in cahoots with a society of legendary pirates comprising Sir Henry Morgan, Blackbeard, Ann Bonney (Anne Of The Indies – whose story, incidentally, was being told contemporaneously in a much more satisfying film by that title), Captain Kidd, etc.; apparently, this Governor's so mean that even they are no more than his mere underlings!

Anyway, O'Connor eventually captures a ship practically single-handed (and sets free the convicts within, among them James Arness, on their way to Debtors' Prison), which wins him the moniker "Bloodthirsty Dave" and – naturally – a place in the pirate brotherhood. Recognizing the Governor's right-hand man as the courier of his message to them, the hero realizes the statesman's dual nature and determines to meet Carter in order to stop her impending marriage (she had earlier shunned O'Connor for his own buccaneering activity!).

This he does by impersonating a foppish aristocrat at a ball (whose presence causes a snobbish lady to enquire "Who is that weird creature?"), though his ruse is discovered soon after and lands him once again in jail. Needless to say, everything comes out right by the end: the villain receives his come-uppance after engaging in a fencing duel with O'Connor on a ship's mast, hero and heroine marry, and the pirates – given a royal pardon – turn respectable…or do they?

Difficult but worth seeing

I wonder if the original 265-minute version (see "trivia") will ever be released on DVD? It seems to me that out of respect for Mr. Kurosawa, arguably the greatest filmmaker who's ever lived, it should be done if at all possible. If only I were a billionaire...

I found the film very difficult to follow, probably in part because of the extensive cutting (which is obvious in a few places), but also because, to my shame, I've never read the Dostoevski novel, though I started on it many years ago.

But the film is worth watching, despite the considerable difficulties it may pose, if only for the extraordinary--I won't say acting, but perhaps PRESENCE will do--of Toshiro Mifune, and the very fine acting by virtually all the other cast members. And of course for the magnificent visual compositions by this unsurpassable master of film, Akira Kurosawa.

And perhaps most important: for the moral tone of the film. I reverence Kurosawa not only for his amazing skill, but above all for his moral preoccupation. Without being preachy, in film after film he reminds us of the things that are really important in our lives and in our relationships with others. Very few filmmakers seem, especially nowadays, to care about that. I believe Kurosawa was a master not only of film but of life itself.

Where did the killer go ???

This western series of the late '40's and early '50's was one of the best...... mainly due to the exemplary performances of Tim Holt & Chito Martin. This film was very well done, with Tim & his woman-crazy sidekick on the trail of an elusive killer.

Action and suspense were always in the forefront in these films, with this one being a prime example. Holt was a rare star who could handle action & acting equally well. In this one, he helps to make a standard plot believable.

Even non-western fans can find good entertainment in a Holt film. Enjoy this one, pardners ! ( I did .... )

Frank and Jesse

Macdonald Carey and Wendell Corey play the roles of Jesse and Frank James in Paramount's The Great Missouri Raid. The James brothers story has never ceased to fascinate people and any number of Hollywood legends have taken a crack at one brother or the other.

Ray Rennahan who is the Mercedes Benz of color cinematographers lends his talents to a nicely photographed western, this is one of the best things about The Great Missouri Raid.

Part of the screen time here is shared with Ward Bond, first as a Union Cavalry Major and then as the head of a private detective agency Bond is obsessed with bringing in the James brothers after his brother James Millican is killed raiding the James farm. That was the way it was in Missouri, the James brothers rode with Quantrill who were border raiders, not regular troops. Bond sees no reason to extend any clemency to these two especially after Millican is killed.

Ellen Drew and Lois Chartrand are the women Jesse and Frank woo and wed and Anne Revere just before her blacklist hiatus days registers strongly as their mother who lost an arm in a rather ill conceived move by the authorities to get the James boys.

No new ground broken her, still western fans will enjoy this retelling of the Saga of the James Brothers.

A spy flick that never ignites

"Flame of Stamboul" begins in Istanbul but is mostly set in Cairo, Egypt. It was made just before big social and political changes swept the Middle East, and this film has a kind of 1940s feel to it. But unlike the '40s spy classics, it lacks suspense.

The "Flame" in the title is a nightclub dancer who agrees to take part in a big jewel heist, never guessing that it is really an espionage operation. She also doesn't realize that American agents are on her trail.

The beginning of the movie is the best, when things are still murky enough to be intriguing. But once it becomes clear what's going, the plot just kind of unfolds, without any interesting twists. And the dancing is unimpressive, even though the "Flame" is supposed to be the hottest entertainer in the Levant.

George Zucco plays the master spy known as "the Voice." This was one of his final films before he retired for health reasons, and he looks sluggish and frail. You could say the same about the movie.

Don't waste your time!

This movie was horrible. I couldn't even get through it. It's about a young man that supposedly kills his best friend in self defense. He claims the friend was drunk and starting attacking him so he had to defend himself and accidentally kills him. John Derek plays the man who commits the murder. And his dad, played by Lee J. Cobb, just happens to be an attorney.

This is cookie-cutter soap opera drama. The acting is horrible, except for the gal that plays John Derek's secretary, played by Jody Lawrence. At one point, she is relaying phone messages "from your harem", to Derek's character. But she does it by taking on the accents and mannerisms of each of the callers. It's hilarious! But there's nothing else here worth watching.

Another excellent Powell Noir

Somehow, I missed this little gem over the years.

Excellent location filming, combined with a compelling script and great acting - a definite must-see for "film noir" fans. My only complaint is the somewhat stale performance by Rhonda Fleming - I think they needed somebody a bit more "earthy" for the part. Richard Erdman and Jean Porter are excellent in their supporting roles.

It was rare in 1951, to see so many actual locations in a film, but this is obviously a low-budget enterprise. Plus, the nature of "noir" is almost always to utilize reality, as opposed to artifice. I did notice some sloppiness with the usage of studio sets; the interiors of the trailers were, of course, sets, and many times when characters exit, the blank studio wall is clearly visible.

One goof occurs when Powell's character drops off Fleming at her office. As the car drives away, the cameraman is clearly visible in the window's reflection. Of course, who knew then that a viewer would eventually be able to freeze-frame a shot?

Great film.....highly recommended.

Master and Commander

It's unfair that Raoul Walsh's name is labeled by the books as a second-level filmmaker in relation with, say, a Ford or a Hawks. He was an extraordinary crafted and prolific director, capable of incorporating standard studio material into his own personal worldview. `Captain Horatio Hornblower' is full of little moments that exceed any genre limitation. These `sparkles of Truth' may be the tracking shot along the empty room while Peck reads the letter of his deceased wife, or when Virginia Mayo kisses the youngster the way his mother used to did. So the adventure film becomes something bigger than life, just as `White Heat' used of the conventions of the gangster film to turn into metaphysics, or `Colorado Territory' departed the western into the depths of existentialism. This film is enjoyable from beginning to end, and it's a clear predecessor of Peter Weir's `Master and Commander', with which it shares a few tone, character and plot elements.

Very good update of the Drummond series of the 30's

This is a very good movie with Walter Pidgeon doing an excellent job as Bulldog Drummond. Algy too is back and played to perfection by David Tomlinson. The story is filled with suspense and action. But where are Colonel Neilson, Tenny, and Phyllis Clavering, The woman Major Drummond is always about to marry but, alas, usually does not? Margaret Leighton as Sergeant Helen Smith fills in nicely for Phyllis Clavering and this somewhat compensates for Ms Clavering's absence, plus giving a new twist to the comparable role. This is a faithful rendition of the Bulldog Drummond series and highly recommended for fans and non-fans.

One small step up the ladder for Marilyn Monroe...

This is one of those conventional comedies of the '50s in which the righteous triumph over big bad corporate America, with MONTY WOOLLEY as a man who becomes indignant when forced to retire and goes about hatching a plan to draw attention to the subject of forced retirement.

The theme isn't conventional, but the treatment is. Woolley gets to strut his stuff in scene after scene until the point becomes so obvious that you're willing to watch others in the cast who seem to be watching him on the sidelines. And there are some new faces to watch. David WAYNE, JEAN PETERS, RUSS TAMBLYN and newcomer MARILYN MONROE, who already had such a publicity build-up from Fox that many flocked to see the film because Marilyn was in it. She has a small, but choice role, as a curvy secretary who knows her effect on men. She shines (glows is a better word) in a charming small role.

If you're a Monty Woolley fan and like his particular style of emoting (acid-tongued and quick witted most of the time), you'll enjoy this, although it's certain a lesser work considering that it was written by Paddy Cheyefsky, who was then at the height of his writing powers.

Jeff Chandler wins the Maureen O'Hara handicap

Back in the 1940s Universal studios big star was Maria Montez who hit a gold mine in those Arabian sand and sandal epics with Jon Hall and Sabu. A whole set was built for her and her films.

Now boss Carl Laemmle at Universal was always practical and why waste those sets. So Universal made a whole lot of those films for its post war pin up boys, Tony Curtis, Rock Hudson, and Jeff Chandler.

But this was one of the worst of them. Of course the obvious flaw is Maureen O'Hara as the Red-headed Arab princess. Ms. O'Hara was great when she was cast right, but here, she looks ridiculous and she knows it.

The plot such as it is involves Jeff Chandler as a Bedouin chief who has one aim, to capture the Black Stallion, Shozada. Along the way he develops a yen for Maureen. Well who wouldn't, redheads being such a premium out there in the Tunisian desert.

Maureen wants the horse too. She wants it so she can win the annual horse race and not have to marry one of the two Corsair Brothers, Lon Chaney, Jr. and Buddy Baer. Yoikes, what a choice.

So hero and heroine find a commonality of interest in the horse and each other.

I've often wondered what Jeff Chandler, who's real name was Ira Grossel, and who took being Jewish very seriously thought about playing an Arab. Remember this is post the Israeli war of independence and Chandler was a noted Zionist. He didn't look thrilled to be in this picture either. Was it politics or was it because it was such a stinkeroo.

Dennison & Gray star in intriguing mystery

The Franchise affair is set in 50s England when people doffed their caps, respect was given its due and everything was oh so proper. This film stars the real life married couple Dennison and Gray and you can see by their interplay that they love each other. Ann Stephens plays Betty Kane which must be the highlight of her brief career. Athene Seyler as Dennisons Aunt is as always a delight and we have a future Doctor Who as well as Tremayne from the Champions doing very professional work.Kenny More in an early part oozes his considerable charm and the film works on a quaint level. The stilted acting is a product of English film in the fifties and there is enough intrigue to keep everyone happy. All in all a lovely little picture.
