European masterpiece. A classic unheard of!

What a wonderful movie full of inspiring ideas! A well-scripted, well-acted, and on overall rich movie from the era of Rudolph II, a Holy Roman Emperor of the 16th century, resident in Prague, the central residence of the Roman Empire of the 1600s.

This film images a central theme revolving around the philosophical idea expressed first by Montesquieu in the 18th century, that an absolute concentration of power in the hand of one ruler would eventually lead to tyranny and oppression of the people. This movie portrays this very well by the expressive acting of Werich, a Czechoslowak classic actor.

A movie well overlooked in the West for its main theme can only be viewed if you buy it in Prague on some of the DVDs which are still in distribution.

This was such a good movie, I'd like to see it again.

This was a great movie, but I only saw it once, and I would very much like to see it again. To me, it is a classic; a very long movie (lengthy like "Gone With The Wind")and my sister and I would like to obtain a video copy to view it again. If anyone knows where we can obtain a video of this movie, I sure would appreciate it.

Puzzle Mystery

This is a tightly-constructed mystery of the pre-Black Mask style, in which the solving of the crime -- here a potential serial killer -- must be tracked down, and the only clear clue is a bit of paper at the scene of the crime with a cypher code.

The movie tries to add psychological drama by turning it from a "Whoodunnit" to a "Howcatchem" a style of mystery familiar to all fans of the old "Columbo" TV movie series, with the added punch that it is told from the viewpoint of the killer -- in this case, Robert Preston, who is an American who is somehow running a code-breaking division for the British government. Motivations are established early, but the whole thing is rendered a bit flat by the lack of details that surround the personnel. The result is a well-told story that is not, alas, particularly gripping.

Matrimonial agency

Isn't the matrimonial agency subject interesting? As the Beatles sing "Ah look at all those lonely people?Where do they all come from?Where do they all belong?".To my knowledge, this is the only FRench movie which deals with it.

Bernard Blier is a bachelor and it is sure easy to see the reason why: an over possessive mother ;he once met a girl ,Gilberte ,but he threw it all away ...He inherits a matrimonial agency;after contemplating selling it ,he chooses to manage it.And Le Chanois does then what he does best: he creates one hundred characters ,one quality which was almost lost after the Nouvelle Vague rising.

Like Le Chanois's precedent work "Sans Laisser d' Adresse" ,"Agence Matrimoniale" is populist cinema. Not for highbrows ,but for people who like the old cinema, the one which tells stories.

Review :

A masterpiece about the "dream industry" and shattered dreams

A wonderful, poignant masterpiece by the great Visconti and Anna-the-Great-Magnani. On the surface, it is a simple story about a mother's obsession to use her little daughter's appearance to escape the poverty of post-war Italy. What transpires is the cruel truth about the beauty- and illusion-making industry (cinema), with all its inherent cynicism, at a time when hunger for the daily bread was equaled by hunger for fantasy and beauty.

I've seen this movie only once, ages ago, and it still remains with me as one of the most unforgettable films I have ever seen. In a world that has seen hundreds of thousands of films that is no small feat.

Siamese twins are a singing act, apparently in vaudeville. Their manager, to drum up business bribes a man who has a shooting act to become romantically involved with her. The bribe works and business increases dramatically. The man proposes marriage and the proposal is accepted. He walks out on her on their wedding night to remain with his assistant with whom he has a relationship. The sister of the rejected bride shoots him during his act. The movie starts with the judge, who is hearing the case without a jury, advises us, the audience, that this is a difficult case. The movie poses the question of whether he can punish the one who is the shooter without punishing the other sister.

Text-Book Exploitation Flick

One has to really feel sorry for the Hilton sisters. Fine vaudeville singers, they were screwed over throughout their whole lives due to the fact that they were conjoined (siamese) twins. It should be fitting then, that they took the lead roles in this film, based on their lives.

CHAINED FOR LIFE tells the story (typical of the time, in "flashback") of Vivian and Dorothy Hamilton (couldn't they be a little less obvious with the names?), conjoined twins who sing in a vaudeville show, but are humiliated by their manager through a publicity marriage stunt that goes horribly wrong when one of the twins genuinely falls in love with the "husband" Andre, only to have her heart broken when he takes the pay advance promised him for the stunt, reveals he never loved her, and annuls the marriage to marry his "normal" lover. The other twin, who never liked him anyway, avenges her sister's sorrow by shooting him during one of his final presentations with his own pistol (he was the show's trick shooter). A single judge in court has to hear the case and decide the fate of both twins, the guilty and the innocent.

Sounds interesting right? I thought so too, unfortunately this film totally ditches the court-room aspect which pulled me in, focusing instead on the re-telling of the plight of the heartbreak and the marriage stunt. In retrospect, this was probably a good thing, because the film is boring, and limiting it to the court room would be the only thing that could make the film even worse. The acting is totally dry, and, although the film attempts to address the morality of the situation and has some interesting/thoughtful quotes in monologues towards the end, the script is humdrum, exactly the same as all the other dull, low-budget '50s "thrillers", only with conjoined twins!

One can't really blame the Hilton sisters though. They deliver the goods in several musical sequences in the film, which have no purpose whatsoever other than to show us that, though bad actors, the Hilton sisters are great singers; this is really the only reason to watch the film, to see the "amazing singing siamese twins". Really, it's sad that this film and FREAKS were the only way the Hiltons could be preserved, since neither film shows their true potential, as prejudice against them had ensured that they would never get a proper recording or film contract. This is why the film itself is ironic, since its only appeal to the audience is to gawk at the siamese twins (save for those short times when we are swept up in song and hear the voices, ignoring the bodies they came from) and its overlying message is about how they have suffered throughout their lives and how this gawking and exploitation is wrong.

The Sidewinder

Flaming Feather casts Sterling Hayden as a rancher and Forrest Tucker as a cavalry lieutenant who make a bet as to who will catch the notorious outlaw known as the Sidewinder. Hayden whose ranch was recently burned out and cattle stolen is not satisfied with the performance of the army in catching this desperado. The Sidewinder has as his gang a collection renegade Ute Indians which makes him the army business as opposed to civilian law enforcement. Hayden and Tucker have a wager on who will catch him first as no white people know his identity.

It wasn't hard to figure it out just look at the casting. Even without IMDb identifying the Sidewinder on Flaming Feather's page it was easy to figure out by the kind of roles this player is usually cast in. The real suspense is whether Hayden or Tucker will wind up with leading ladies Arleen Whelan and Barbara Rush. Another good part is that of Carol Thurston who played many exotic types in her career and is the Indian mistress of The Sidewinder.

Flaming Feather is good, but highly predictable.

Totò does Harpagon (sort of)

A bit Molière's L'Avare, a bit Plautus' Aulularia, this little comedy is notable because of the great comedic talent of Totò, one of the most charismatic and compulsively watchable Italian actors of the 20th century - even if he spent most of his careers with mediocre or "quite funny" movies. This is not one of his bests (see, for example, his wonderful part as the expert thief in I soliti Ignoti), but it's rather amusing nonetheless.

Greedy Baron Antonio Peletti (Totò) refuses to give to his town the heredity left by his father, a box full of precious jewels, which he keeps for himself. The major and the rest of the townspeople therefore organize a trick at his expense: they'll make him believe he is dead, and, in a fake "afterlife", they'll try to convince him to finally show them where the money is hidden to save his soul.

Although Totò's performance as the greedy baron is by far the best thing of the picture, I have to say that a young Carlo Croccolo is also rather funny as his miserable waiter.

Overall, not a great movie, and almost every scene without Totò (thankfully, very few) is totally worthless; besides, while the first part (before the fake death) is funny, and the second (during the baron's ordeal in the "afterlife") is also not bad, the last act the movie loses momentum and drags. However, Totò' s interpretation of the archetypal "greedy" character inevitably brings a smile to my face.

Mandrin was a friend to the poor

The English title reads "the affairs of Madame De Pompadour" but the king's favorite is called in the French/Italian version Madame De Beaudricourt ,a name which is virtually unknown in French history ,and for a good reason;madame De Pompadour never met Mandrin !how could she? However ,in Christian-Jaque's "Fanfan La Tulipe" ,the hero met the king's mistress (and madam).

Before the screening of the movie ,a historian warned us: we are far from historical facts.

Mandrin (here some kind of Robin Hood who steals from the customers and gives to the poor),efficiently portrayed by Italian Raf Vallone,is smart, defiant, womanizer.Sentenced to death ,he is about to be hanged (I cannot see anyone of your friends coming ,says his enemy Monsieur Verneuil ).He is the leader of a pack whose activities are various .They even attack the diligences -which the real Mandrin never did.

Now for the historical facts: Mandrin did not enjoy a sweet retirement in Italy;he was put on the wheel ,an execution I will not depict:suffice to say it makes your hair stand on end.His life was short (although for the time it was not that much) and he was very popular all over the country.

Well it turns out that that pianist is Hans son,who also goes to the Arts n Entertainment school. Hans receives a special letter, that Anne Rosar reads, that the character that's played by Maria Andergast, is coming . She to is working at the School of Arts.Well The party last all night and ends early in the morning.Harry Fuss takes Waltraut Hass home , where she live with her parents,Rudolph Carl who is a barber and his wife, played by Hilde Jaeger, who looks like the same actress who played Empress in Dances of the king,1942.Well Moser goes to work as a porter either in a train station or a bus station , it's never explained. After the Party Ferdinand, played by Horbinger takes his fellow workers out to a bar for smokes and drinks. There's no small roles

The movie is very good. The first half revolves around Cantinflas being a Fireman and the second half him being a policeman.

What I see strange, is that the credits show only 10 names, including Cantinflas, and then when we watch the movie we can spot at least 20 more people, women in their majority, with bigger roles than the first 10, all of them uncredited.

I know that credits belong to those who spend more time on screen, but here, everybody gets dialog and screen time, and only a few get their credits. Not to sound disrespectful, but I think it is important to us, who watch the movies, to get to know each and every one of the people in the movie...

Review :

A great film of passion

Casque d'or is one of the greatest films about passion I have ever seen. The intensity of the feeling between Simone Signoret and Serge Reggiani, particularly the former, is overwhelming. These people are outsiders from the very beginning, being part of the criminal underworld from which they will never escape. The honest, bourgeois world is permanently closed to them. Children in French secondary school write essays about this film as if it were a classic French novel. It certainly is a classic, and it could not have been made in any country other than France.
