George Bird's rather lonely, anonymous existence as an underappreciated seller of farm machinery is jarred when his physician informs him that he is suffering from the rare malady Lampington's Disease and only has a few weeks to live. Believing he has nothing to lose, Bird resigns his position and withdraws his modest life savings in order to spend his remaining time in a "posh" seaside resort. There he keeps his own counsel about his condition and meets people who live in a world he could never have imagined existed. Incredibly he finds personal and professional opportunities now open to him that that he never dreamed would be his, but unfortunately he is no position to take advantage of them... until fate lends a hand.

Review :

exceptionally well done but a bit depressing

Although most Americans have little knowledge of his work other than Star Wars, Alec Guinness produced an amazing body of work--particularly in the 1940s-1950s--ranging from dramas to quirky comedies. I particularly love his comedies, as they are so well-done and seem so natural and real on the screen--far different from the usual fare from Hollywood.

This movie is the story of a man who thinks he is dying and decides to go out in style--living it up among the wealthy and well-bred. After all, he figures, he certainly won't need the money after he's gone! The marvelous acting and experiences among the upper crust make this a must-see. However, be forewarned, this is an incredibly depressing film. I doubt if I would have allowed the movie to be as dark as this one, but at least I can commend those who made it for not taking the easy way out and making a typical Hollywood style ending.

I'd buy cigarettes from her, and I don't even smoke.

Not the best film that Hedy Lamarr has been in, but certainly another chance to enjoy this incredibly beautiful and talented actress. She made this semi-documentary film noir after Samson and Delilah. Supposedly, she got paid some big bucks as she was a hot property at the time.

The story takes place in pre-Castro Cuba, but it is basically the same as today. It was a jumping off spot for refugees from Europe who wanted to come to the US. Hedy plays a Buchenwald concentration camp victim that has been bouncing around, is broke, and only 90 miles from her dream.

She runs into an INS agent (John Hodiak) that is working undercover to find out about the smugging into the US. Director Joseph H. Lewis was more familiar with westerns, and you can see that here as Hodiak ends up playing Dudley Do-right and rescuing Nell (Lamarr) from Snidely Whiplash (George Macready, who plays a great cultured bad guy).

A quality story, it's not, but. hey, we came here for Hedy.

Love wins, even when you're old and people try to stop you

A gentle, real movie about four generations of a family in South Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. There are three interlocked stories linked by the main character, Geoff, who happens to have some bad luck. He is not helped by father who refuses to understand and a mother who is incapable of understanding and a wife (Kate) who has looked into the future and decided she wants to be somewhere else other than with Geoff. At the same time Geoff's grand-dad requires help, as does his son and Geoff does his best, even to stealing car batteries for grand-dad and stripping half naked for the Rock Goth band contest to beat all Rock Goth band contests to help his son. Lots of original music, some of it is just awful but that adds much charm. Dave Kelly is the quintessential country footy club president, Wilbur Wilde is beautifully sleazy. A beguiling cameo from William McInnes as a creepy scoutmaster and a wonderful performance from Clint Bizzell - a long way from his role as an AFL footballer. Kate Feldman is outstanding as the long suffering wife who finds a new life. Andrew Kelly is mesmerising as the priest at the funeral of Geoff's dad, as is Jane Kelly as a Goth Rock specialist TV presenter. Suspend disbelief and enjoy the ride, Grand-dad did - one of Charles 'Bud' Tingwell's last performances and equal to his best.

As a favor to her actress sister Abigail, New England farmer Jane Falbury allows a group of actors use her barn as a theater for their play. Bright Musical

To look at "Summer Stock" you wouldn't think there were any challenges. Everyone seems to be having a happy time.

The remarkable thing is how Judy Garland's weight problems, due to over eating and drugs, were covered up. She looks fresh and bubbly, along with here co-star, Gene Kelly, who was pushing 40, and hankering to get on to more ambitious film projects.

The two are perfectly paired and, with the comedy of Phil Silvers and "other woman" of Gloria DeHaven, this musical comes off swimmingly.

I really love Judy's renditions of the joyous "Hello, Neighbor," the lovely "Friendly Star," and the show-stopping, "Get Happy." Her voice is in fine condition, and is a pleasure to hear. Kelly dances up a storm, and the entire production smiles with good cheer.

As one of Judy's songs go, "If You Feel Like Singing . . . Sing!" She does, and we are the lucky recipients.

Review :

One of the best films of the '50s.

The film follows an excellent hunter (Granger) who is payed to go on a safari to find the lost husband of Deborah Kerr and Richard Carlson. He reluctantly agrees. Along the way they run into different perils. Including many tribes that want the group dead.

The film is very exciting. And you feel for the characters when they come into contact with danger. I wish more action films could make you do that. The performances are the reason behind this. It's too bad that the actors and actresses in the film weren't nominated for Oscars. I doubt they deserved to win, but they deserved to be up.

The script is also very good. It strays away from the book just a little bit. But I have no problem with that because the film, by itself, is very good.

The cinematography and editing are flawless. And they rightly won Oscars. The film was also nominated for Best Picture. It's one of the better adventure films.

Quite Impressive

In the aftermath of World War II, Japan had been completely devastated. Their economy was in ruins and that resulted in high unemployment, hunger and disease. To make ends meet some women had to resort to prostitution simply to survive. This was frowned upon in Japanese society and those caught were sent to prison. But there was one particular rehabilitation center known as the "White Lily" which took in a small number of prostitutes and tried to give them a new set of skills and a more wholesome outlook. As it so happens, a young woman named "Yukawa" is sent to this rehabilitation center but unlike the other inmates she has no feelings of shame or remorse. She also refuses to accept anybody else's view of morality. Additionally, some of the other women take an immediate dislike to her because she comes from a higher class than they do. While they are obedient (for the most part) she is rebellious and shows disdain for the rules. Now, while this film shares many common traits with other "Women in Prison" (WIP) movies, what I like about it is the way it portrays Japanese society during this particular time in history. And while the fact that this is an older movie filmed in black and white and entirely in Japanese (with English subtitles) might turn off some viewers, I think that those who are familiar with most movies made during this time will probably find this one to their liking. Personally, I found this movie to be quite impressive and have rated it accordingly. Above average.
