Review :
Police methodically look for a bunco artist who has killed, but surprises block their way
"Post Office Box 1001" is a superior police procedural noir. Although the plot is not at all like "To the Ends of the Earth" (with Dick Powell), somehow the way it is filmed on location or the lighting remind me of that one.
The story opens with a bold murder on a crowded street. During the movie, we are treated to excellent location views of Barcelona and its people. The story is told from the point of view of the police, as they systematically develop evidence. Just when you think the case is solved, either success eludes them or else the case broadens out and deepens. The complications and blockages are realistic. The plot twists are fresh and not hackneyed, so suspense is maintained throughout. This is a very good script, well acted and directed.
Flashbacks artfully show how the initial shooting began.
The climactic chase scene should not be missed. It rivals the mirrors in "Lady from Shanghai" as it proceeds through what looks like a real fun house with some amazing obstacles inside.
The only negative, and it's not that important for this kind of movie, is that sometimes the music is too lightweight or canned or routine. It sometimes sets too light a mood.
This picture is a welcome addition to the growing body of foreign film noirs from the classic era that are little by little making an appearance. The print I watched is not remastered. It doesn't look new, and it looks like an older movie, but certainly it is a very good and easy to watch print with excellent clear subtitles.
